That is how I furnished one of my previous homes. Cherry Hill is a wonderful experience because so many of the manufacturers are located there. If you are the type of person who enjoys matching furniture or the suite set type of furniture, you will like visiting the showrooms. You save money by buying direct from the manufacturer, especially if you buy discontinued items. But, the shipping is where you pay through the nose depending on where and how much furniture you buy. And, in order to purchase direct, you will have to hire a designer who has a trade account with that manufacturer and they will either charge you a percentage or a fee for their services. I have also found that when the economy turns dicey, like it is now, you often can do better on your own buying inventory clearance, going out of business and year end sales. That is because often stores purchased a piece on their floor that was manufactured at the beginning of a run for that design when the prices were lower, thus the discount is bigger. If the piece has a 6-8 week wait time for delivery, like at NC, the piece is being manufactured for you at current prices (and usually out of the country). In my own home, I prefer that the furniture has a "collected over time and travel" ambiance that is ecletic and reflects who I am rather than what a particular manufacturer thinks should be the pieces that go together. If you are this type of person, it won’t be worth your while to make the trip, spend the time or energy in NC.
Most manufacturers outsource their productions abroad.
I’ve had good experience with http://www.homelement.com
Good luck!
Ok, it depends on what you want. The reason people say go to NC is because that is where many of the higher end furniture company’s main warehouses and factories are.
So, if you try and go there, you will save on shipping costs, etc….BUT most of the time you can’t buy directly from them unless you open an account as a business!
So you’d probably be wasting a trip. Other furniture companies may not have the most high-end-type chairs, tables, etc….but you probably will be saving money there in the long run. (Ex: Ikea, Rooms to go, Ashley, etc.)
I work at an interior design firm and we have accounts with MANY of the vendors out of NC, but even the COST prices are more expensive than what you could find in the other stores…and at those stores you can finance and stuff…
So, if you’re doing it just to save money-depending on how far away you live-it might just cost you more to get there and then get all your stuff home!!!
Try places like furniture outlets, and TJ Maxx Homegoods…places that advertise discount furniture!
Good luck!!
Hahahaah. No design experience. 2008
I got to visit Cherry Hill I was so impressed by the lovely items sold in stores there that I made arangements to move there….Then my bubble got busted and I had to remain in Michigan….
Best of Luck and Have fun.
If you want to get high-end stuff for a little cheaper, it may help. If you were looking to get furniture in the "Rooms-to-Go" price range, then don’t bother.
